6 Tips for Safe Snow Shoveling

One of the most beautiful things during winter is the gorgeous snow. But snow can also be deadly. When it snows, a lot of people injure themselves shoveling snow.
But there are things you can do to protect yourself when you are shoveling snow.
Below are six tips that you can use to shovel snow safely.

1. Make Sure You’re Fit

Shoveling can put a strain on your back and heart. If you’re not in really good shape, if you’re overweight, if you’re older, or you have had problems with your heart or back, hire someone to do it. You can also buy a snow-blower.

2. Warm Your Muscles Up First

Just like with any type of exercise, you should warm up and stretch. This is going to loosen your muscles and get them ready for the job you’re going to do.

3. Use the Correct Shovel

Your shovel shouldn’t be any heavier than three and a half pounds, and you shouldn’t choose one that has a really large blade. Remember that the heavier and bigger your shovel is, the heavier the snow will be. The shovel should be the height of your elbows when it’s standing upright.

4. Bundle up

Wear a few layers of clothing that is warm and lightweight. It also should be comfortable and easy so that you can move around easily.
Be sure that you are covering your feet, hands, and head (particularly your ears) are covered well. You should be wearing water-resistant, high-cut, and warm winter boots that have good traction.
You should wear flexible and light gloves that offer you a grip that is good. If the weather really is cold, you should wear something that covers your mouth.

5. Don’t Go Fast

You don’t want to go too fast when you are shoveling. Remember that you should pace yourself. You should shovel about 15 scoops each minute. Shoveling will make you start sweating. When you stop, you’ll be chilled. Be efficient but don’t overtire yourself.

6. Push Rather than Lift

Push snow instead of lifting it. If you have to throw the snow, only take as much snow as you’ll be able to lift easily. Remember when the snow is wet it’s going to be heavy. It’s a good idea to use something called snow scoops for pushing snow. This will help you to move the snow a lot easier.
These are the six things you can do to keep yourself safe while shoveling snow. If you follow these tips, you will have a less chance of injuring yourself and get the job done more efficiently.

Bonus Tip: Visit Naples!

During the winter months, the temperatures are between 50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Normally, the temperature during the winter time stays between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It rarely drops below or above these temperatures, which means you don’t have to take all of your long coats, sweaters, scarves, hats and mittens with you to Naples during your visit!
