Everglades Kayaking: What You Need to Know

Everglades kayaking is an experience full of variety; find the best pathways for you and your group when you paddle through the area’s waterways. Rentals are available at the Flamingo Marina and the Gulf Coast Visitor Center. If you prefer to bring your own kayak, that is allowed as well. You can set out on your journey from several locations within the Everglades National Park.
If you would rather have a guided tour, there several vendors that provide everglades rentals and eco adventures. Find a permitted guide to lead your tour for the most educational experience of the Everglades.
As always, be safe when you’re on the water. You’ll also want to make sure you pack a few light supplies for your excursion. Suggested items to pack include bottles of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, rain gear, snacks, and a waterproof bag. Also, make sure to have a floatation device for each person and an extra paddle.

Everglades Kayak Trails

The Everglades has several amazing kayaking trails. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced kayaker, there is plenty to challenge you at Everglades National Park. Traverse the waters of the Nine Mile Pond Trail for a mid-sized loop of 3.5 to 5 miles. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete at a leisurely pace and provides plenty of opportunities to view birds, alligators, turtles, and fish.
If seeing the mangroves up close is high on your to-do list, you’ll want to try the Hell’s Bay Trail. This trail winds through the mangrove lined waterways for 5.5 miles each way. Block off 6 to 8 hours to complete this trail without rushing. Also, be aware that this area is prone to bugs, especially in the summertime. For the best experience, bring a bug jacket and/or plenty of insect repellent.
The Flamingo Canoe Trails offer a range of lengths and sceneries, including something for every kayaker. They can be accessed via launch points at the Flamingo Marina or along the main park road.
