NO RED TIDE: The organism that typically causes red tide blooms (Harmful Algal Blooms) in Florida is Karenia brevis. Florida red tide blooms originate 11-45 miles offshore and may be carried by wind and currents to the coastal beaches. Blooms typically occur in the late summer or early fall and can last several months. They can cause eye and respiratory irritation to beach goers, and may kill fish, birds and marine mammals. The Florida Department of Health monitors red tide blooms.

WATER QUALITY: High tides at beaches and bays and rough surf conditions caused by Hurricane Michael passing by out in the Gulf of Mexico lead to a higher than normal bacteria count at eight area beaches. What’s Happening

There have been red tides reported in every state along the coast and the occurrences may be happening more often. They’re a big concern for Southwest Florida because they’re not only affecting the health of marine ecosystems and people, but they’re also affecting regional and local economies.
However, it’s important to note that not all of these blooms are bad. Most of them are beneficial since these tiny plants provide food for oceanic wildlife. The truth is that they’re a major energy source that fuels the food web of the ocean.
What are we doing to help?
Collier County Parks & Recreation staff has been cleaning county beaches and parks affected by the red tide fish kill in recent days. The water is clean in certain areas where the fishing is awesome, and conditions are not so bad in areas around Naples and nonexistent on Marco Island.

A lot of people have heard of the Red Tide, but they aren’t sure what it is. As its name suggests, it often will turn water red.
Even though a lot of people refer to the blooms as red tides, the term preferred by scientists is harmful algal bloom. Among the nation’s most well-known HABs happens almost ever summer along the Gulf Coast of Florida. This particular bloom, like a lot of these blooms, is due to tiny algae that’s producing toxins which are harmful to fish as well as shellfish.
