Wildlife You May Spot in Naples, FL

One of the things that makes Naples so special is how close you are to nature. Even just a short walk from the beach or a drive through the local parks, you may come across some of Florida’s most unique wildlife. From playful dolphins and gentle manatees to sea turtles and the occasional alligator, nature is never far away in Southwest Florida. 

So keep your eyes open as you never know what you might spot.

🐊 Alligators

Alligators are one of Florida’s most iconic animals and can often be seen in freshwater lakes, canals, ponds, and nature preserves around Naples. Places such as Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the Everglades are especially popular for alligator sightings.

While they may look intimidating, alligators are generally not interested in people and prefer to avoid human contact. The most important thing to remember is to keep a safe distance and never feed them. Feeding alligators causes them to lose their natural fear of humans, which can create dangerous situations for both people and wildlife.

If you encounter an alligator, stay calm, give it plenty of space, and simply admire it from a distance.

🌊 Manatees

Often called “sea cows” because of their gentle nature and slow movements, manatees are one of Florida’s most beloved marine mammals. These peaceful creatures spend much of their time grazing on seagrass and can weigh over 1,000 pounds.

Manatees are frequently spotted in the waters around Naples, including near Naples Pier, local marinas, canals, and sheltered bays. Despite their size, they are incredibly gentle and spend much of their day slowly swimming, resting, or feeding.

If you’re lucky enough to encounter a manatee, enjoy the moment but remember not to touch, feed, or disturb it. Manatees are protected by law, and observing them respectfully helps keep them safe.

🐬Dolphins

Dolphins are among the most beloved animals in Southwest Florida and are regularly spotted along the Naples coastline. You may see them swimming near Naples Pier, playing in the waves, or surfacing alongside boats.

For an even better chance of seeing dolphins, consider joining a dolphin-watching cruise. These excursions often travel through the Gulf and nearby estuaries where dolphins are frequently seen feeding, socializing, and riding boat wakes.

🐢 Sea Turtles

Sea turtles are another remarkable animal that calls Southwest Florida home. Several species visit local beaches, and during nesting season, female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs in the sand.

While spotting a sea turtle is always exciting, it’s important to give them plenty of space. Never touch a turtle, disturb a nest, or use bright lights near nesting areas, as this can disorient both adult turtles and hatchlings.

🦈 Sharks

Yes, sharks live in the waters off Naples – but there’s no need to worry. Most species found in the Gulf are not interested in humans, and shark encounters remain extremely rare.

Occasionally, sharks may swim closer to shore, particularly during periods of increased fish activity. If you happen to see a shark while swimming, remain calm and slowly move toward shore. Avoid splashing or making sudden movements, as splashing can resemble the movements of injured fish and may attract a shark’s attention out of curiosity.
