Spotting Dolphins & Manatees
For guests at Naples Florida Vacation Homes, there is nothing quite like the thrill of seeing a dorsal fin slice through the surface of the Gulf or a round “sea cow” nose pop up for a breath of air. The warm, shallow waters around the Naples Pier and the winding passes near Tin City are a playground for Bottlenose Dolphins and West Indian Manatees. Our favorite way for you to see them? Get out on the water! Dolphins are social and curious—they love to “surf” the wakes of boats, often leaping just feet away from your camera lens. For a quieter encounter, kayaking through the mangrove estuaries is the best way to see the gentle, slow-moving manatees as they munch on seagrass in the sun-drenched shallows.
To be prepared: If you’re heading out on your own, early morning and late afternoon are the “golden hours” for sightings. Dolphins are most active when hunting for breakfast or dinner, and the calmer water makes them much easier to spot. If you aren’t a boater, don’t worry—the Naples Pier and the shoreline at Vanderbilt Beach offer fantastic viewpoints where you can often see dolphins patrolling for fish. After a morning of wildlife spotting, you might enjoy a visit to the Naples Botanical Garden to see how the local flora complements the marine beauty, or grab a casual lunch at Pinchers at Tin City while watching the boats go by.
We always suggest booking a guided eco-tour for the best experience. Local captains know the “secret spots” in the backwaters where manatees seek warmth during the cooler months.
