Travel Insurance for Hurricanes

Do you have trip protection insurance?

You’ve probably heard about flight insurance, baggage loss insurance, and medical insurance for travelers. We want to make sure that you know about trip cancellation insurance as well. Many trip cancellation policies offer protection in case your trip is disrupted by one of Florida’s famous hurricanes. Trust us, travel insurance is worth it.

Are you worried about hurricanes?

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance is designed to reimburse you for many non-refundable, prepaid vacation costs if your travel plans are disrupted by events beyond your control. The disruption could be a medical emergency, a death in the family, a cancelled or delayed flight, or perhaps lost luggage. Some policies will also cover of your costs if a major weather crisis — such as a hurricane — interrupts your trip.
If you’re booking a Naples, Florida vacation you’ll probably want to give some thought to hurricanes. The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, though it’s rare to see a hurricane in June or July. The vast majority of our storms hit in August, September, and October.

How to buy hurricane coverage

The good news is that trip cancellation or interruption insurance with hurricane coverage is relatively inexpensive. The bad news is that it might be strictly limited in what it covers. For instance, some policies reimburse you only if your holiday accommodations are deemed complete uninhabitable or if the weather conditions are so severe that the airport where your plane was supposed to land is shut down for at least 24 hours..
To get the peace of mind that comes with hurricane insurance, you’ll need to buy it well ahead of time. Once a storm has been given a name by the National Hurricane Center and is being talked about on the news, it’s too late. An insurance company won’t sell you coverage for that storm.
If even a mild storm would upset your plans, you could consider a type of policy called Cancel for Any Reason insurance. It will cost you more, but it gives you wide latitude for canceling. If a forecast of rainy weather is threatening your planned golf vacation, you can cancel just a few days in advance and get reimbursement as much as 75 percent of your pre-paid and non-refundable costs. But keep in mind that with Cancel for Any Reason plans, you need to buy the insurance well in advance of the trip and meet certain cancellation conditions set forth in that plan.
When you rent with Naples Florida Vacation Homes, you can easily add trip cancellation insurance to cover you — not just for hurricanes, but also for illness, flight cancellations, and other unexpected travel issues. We work with Rental Guardian, one of the leaders in the field. With the click of a button you can easily insure your reservation while booking online. Please contact us by phone or Skype for more information about insuring your vacation trip.
